Dr. Jason Bayne

Biography
Doctor Bayne is originally from Manitoba, completing his undergraduate medical training at the University of Manitoba, his General Surgery Residency at the University of Calgary, and his Vascular Surgery fellowship here at McGill University. He was in practice in Edmonton, from 2010 - 2015 at the Grey Nuns Hospital and the Northern Alberta Vascular Centre as an assistant professor with the University of Alberta. He has since returned to McGill and the JGH as an assistant professor of surgery.
Doctor Bayne takes a special interest in advanced aortic endovascular repair as was all peripheral endovascular intervention. He is an international proctor for advanced endovascular cases and brings a wealth of experience from his practice in Edmonton where he started the complex aortic and peripheral endovascular operating room programs.
Doctor Bayne's research interests include endovascular outcomes, peri-operative care, and vascular surgery education. He currently sits on the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery Education Committee. He was also the Vascular Surgery Clerkship Director, and won an award for the Clerkship Preceptor of the Year while at the U of A.
Dr. Robert J. Doonan

Biography
Robert-James Doonan, M.D., Ph.D., is an Aortic and Vascular Surgeon at the Centre universitaire de santé McGill and McGill University Health Centre. Specializing in complex aortic diseases, Dr. Doonan focuses on the management of aneurysms and thoracic aortic conditions. His clinical expertise includes endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) and advanced aortic arch replacement techniques, particularly for patients with chronic multilevel thoracic aortic disease. Dr. Doonan is dedicated to improving patient outcomes by integrating cutting-edge surgical techniques and advancing the field of vascular surgery through his research. His work contributes to refining treatment strategies, including the use of innovative grafting methods and improving the management of aortic diseases. Dr. Doonan continues to shape the future of aortic and vascular surgery through both his clinical practice and ongoing contributions to the scientific community.
Dr. Elie Girsowicz

Biography
Dr. Girsowicz originates from Paris, France where he completed his undergraduate medical training at University Paris Diderot. He completed his General Surgery and Vascular Surgery training in Strasbourg, France (Louis Pasteur University) as a resident between 2009 and 2015. During this period, he earned a Master’s degree in Surgical Sciences from Paris-Est University, investigating the biomechanical aspects of nitinol stents used in peripheral vascular disease. He completed further fellowship training in Vascular Surgery and kidney transplantation between 2015 and 2017 in Strasbourg, came to Montreal in 2018 and graduated from the McGill Advanced Aortic and Peripheral Endovascular Fellowship program in June 2019.
His clinical practice incorporates advanced endovascular treatment of aortic pathology, open and endovascular management of peripheral, carotid and mesenteric vascular disease as well as vascular access creation and maintenance.
Dr. Girsowicz has a special interest in vascular surgical education with a focus on simulation in surgical residency training. He also has a strong interest in technology acquisition and surgical innovation. He has been nominated as the McGill Vascular Surgery Residency Program Director since September 2023.
Dr. Stephen Hanley

Biography
Dr Hanley completed his PhD in surgical research, as well as his undergraduate medical training and General Surgery residency at McGill University before undertaking his Vascular Surgery fellowship at Tufts Medical Centre in Boston, MA. He started his vascular surgery practice at the CISSS de l'Outaouais, serving as chief of the vascular surgery service and course director with the McGill University satellite medical school campus. He also co-initiated a multi-disciplinary limb salvage program. Dr Hanley's clinical practice covers open and endovascular treatment of aneurysmal, carotid, peripheral and mesenteric disease, as well as vascular access and limb salvage/complex wound care. His current research interests include clinical outcomes and improving access to care.
Dr. Kent MacKenzie

Biography
Dr. Kent MacKenzie completed his General Surgery Residency at McGill University and his Vascular Surgery Fellowship at the University of Chicago during which time he spent 6-months as an Endovascular Surgery and Interventional Radiology Fellow. His current clinical practice incorporates open and endovascular treatment for aneurysms of the abdominal and thoracic aorta, acute thoracic aortic emergencies, carotid occlusive disease, peripheral arterial occlusive disease and arteriovenous dialysis access. He participates actively in research activity within the Division of Vascular Surgery and is a strong supporter and participant in residency training.
Dr. MacKenzie has been an Examiner for the Vascular Surgery Examination Board of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, is a former Chair of the Education Committee and Academic Program Chair for the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery (CSVS) and he completed a term on the Strategic Board of the Society for Vascular Surgery. He currently holds an appointment as Associate Professor of Surgery at McGill University, was a prior Osler Fellow at McGill University and completed a 10-year tenure as Program Director for the McGill Vascular Surgery Residency. Dr. MacKenzie was President of the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery in 2018-2019 and has held an Executive position with the CSVS for 7 years.
Dr. MacKenzie is the current Chief and Director of the Division of Vascular Surgery at the MUHC and McGill University.
Dr. Daniel Obrand

Biography
After finishing his Vascular Surgery fellowship at McGill, Dr Daniel Obrand trained at UCLA in endovascular surgery, specializing in endovascular repair of abdominal (EVAR) and thoracic aneurysms and the treatment of Peripheral Vascular Disease using percutaneous angioplasty. He was the first Vascular Surgeon in Canada to engage in a fellowship of this kind. In 1998 Dr. Obrand began performing EVAR at the JGH and was one of the first surgeons in Canada to do so. Under his leadership, the Division of Vascular Surgery at McGill University has become a national leader in endovascular repair of thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms. Percutaneous vascular interventions for aneurysmal disease and occlusive disease is now a significant part of his Vascular Surgery practice.
Dr. Oren Steinmetz

Biography
Dr. Steinmetz completed his general surgery residency at McGill University in 1992 and his Vascular Surgery training at the University of Ottawa in 1993. He is an Associate Professor of Surgery and was the Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery at McGill University from 2002 to 2019. He is an active participant in Vascular and Endovascular societies at the regional, national and international level and was President for the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery in 2009. He began treating aneurysm patients with endovascular stent grafts in 1998 and since that time has helped develop the endovascular program at the RVH into one of the largest and most well-known in the country. In addition to his busy clinical practice at McGill, Dr. Steinmetz has proctored and mentored many vascular surgeons across the country as they have developed their own endovascular programs for the treatment of abdominal and thoracic aortic pathology. Dr. Steinmetz also has an active peripheral arterial practice which incorporates a high volume of percutaneous peripheral angioplasties. His research interests are primarily in clinical outcomes research related to endovascular interventions.
