October 10, 2025

Dear students,

While we are glad to see that the negotiations between the physician federations and government will resume on Monday, unfortunately the FMSQ pressure tactics remain in place.  Therefore, we need to plan for a fifth week of contingency measures, starting October 14.

We understand how challenging the uncertainty of the current situation remains. The UGME team continues to explore all options available within the parameters we need to work to mitigate the impact on you. If you need support during this time, please do not hesitate to avail yourself of the Office of Medical Learner Affairs

In the event the FMSQ suspends its pressure tactics within the next three days, we will email you on Monday, October 13, at 18:00 to provide further instructions with the goal of resuming clinical rotations on Tuesday, October 14.

We know the last four weeks have been stressful. Please make sure you take some time this long weekend for self-care, whether that is getting some fresh air outside, spending time with family or friends, or whatever else it is that brings you joy.

What we’ve done / What we plan to do

This week, we have:

  • communicated with students via email and met with student leadership from each campus
  • conducted a townhall for Med-3 and Med-4
  • Informed Med-3 students about their completion status for the following courses: IM, surgery, and psychiatry
  • planned contingency measures for week five of the FMSQ pressure tactics, as well as a plan to return to clinical settings should the pressure tactics be lifted
  • continued advocating for visiting electives and considerations for CaRMS

 Next week, we will be:

  • completing the review of block 1 data (logs, EPAs, clerkship form data) for pediatrics and obstetrics & gynecology
  • planning contingency measures in the case of a sixth week of pressure tactics as well as a plan for the return to clinical settings should the pressure tactics be lifted
  • communicating with students either via email or town hall meetings
  • participating in advocacy meetings

Update on AFMC advocacy
As a result of advocacy efforts from the four Quebec medical schools in meetings with the AFMC, the AFMC Board of Directors approved recommendations supporting graduating Quebec students. Please refer to the MedPrepp website for more details.

Med-3 Class of 2027

Students in their Clerkship Family Medicine course:
Your rotation will continue as scheduled.

Students in the other core Clerkship year 3 courses:
We ask that all students complete the Clerkship Clinical Supervision form, whether or not they are being supervised. This will help us ensure CAF delivery for students being supervised as well as in planning individualized contingency plans for those not supervised.

Students scheduled to have electives the week of October 13:
Family medicine and research electives will continue as scheduled.

For other electives, it is the responsibility of your supervisor to inform you if they will supervise you or not. We hope that you would have already been informed last week by your supervisor. We ask that all students complete the Clerkship Clinical Supervision form, whether or not they are being supervised. This will help us ensure CAF delivery for students being supervised as well as in planning individualized contingency plans for those not supervised.

Physicianship:
The Conflict Negotiation session on October 17 for students in the Peds/Obsgyn rotation, will run as planned. Please refer to your one45 schedule for your assigned time slot.

Med-4 Class of 2026

For all clinical courses (core rotations or electives), it is the responsibility of your supervisor to inform you if they will supervise you or not. We ask that all students complete the Clerkship Clinical Supervision form, whether or not they are being supervised for electives. This will help us ensure CAF delivery for students being supervised as well as in planning individualized contingency plans for those not supervised.
Students in the Emergency Medicine, Geriatric Medicine courses, or Electives who are not supervised:

INDS 426 PIAT: Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) Module
We have made the EBM module from the INDS 426: Putting it All Together (PIAT)course available to students on both campuses who are unsupervised to complete this week. This module can be found in the PIAT course page on myCourses.

The module consists of a lecture on how to critically review clinical practice guidelines (perceptive students will recognize parts of the lecture from Block C) using the G-Trust tool and then two assignments: A critical review of a clinical practice guideline of the student’s choice and a peer review assignment, offering students the opportunity to provide feedback to their colleagues on their work. Both tasks are representative of the practice of medicine where you are expected to choose a treatment for a given patient based on best practices and then give feedback, in a non-confrontational way to your peers.

Part 1 (critical review) is due Thursday October 16 at 12:00 noon and Part 2 (Peer Review) is due Friday October 17 at 17:00. Information on how and where to submit the assignments and how to receive the peer review is on myCourses.
Only students who are unsupervised are meant to complete the assignment this week. If a student submits part 1, we will assume that they are working on the assignment for the week and they will be required to submit part 2. Failing to submit part 2, if part 1 is submitted, will result in a failure of the element and a remedial activity.
Students who are being supervised this week will be given the opportunity to complete this work at a later date.
For any questions related to the assignment please reach out to Dr.Fallavollita.
Good luck and have fun with this assignment! We urge you all to review guidelines that are of interest to you and relevant to your future practice.

Students in the Emergency Medicine, Geriatric Medicine courses, or Electives who are supervised:
The courses will continue as usual.

Thank you,

The UGME Team
