Vascular Surgery Clinical Electives

Overview

Medical students interested in vascular surgery as a potential career or seeking additional exposure are welcome to apply for a clinical elective.

  • Duration: Minimum of 2 weeks (shorter electives are not accepted)
  • Setting: Rotations available at McGill teaching hospitals
  • Role: Students function as junior residents — dividing their time across:
    • 🏥 Operating Room
    • 🩺 Outpatient Clinics
    • 🚑 Emergency Department
    • 🛏️ Ward Services

  • Service: Vascular Surgery Division (serving both RVH & MGH)
  • Availability: Up to 2 students per rotation
  • Experience:
    • Participation in multidisciplinary vascular surgery service
    • Direct teaching from faculty during:
      • Ambulatory clinics
      • Weekly ward rounds
      • McGill Vascular Surgery Conference
      • Operating room cases
    • Comprehensive exposure to arterial, venous, and lymphatic diseases across the body (cerebrovascular, thoracic, abdominal, peripheral)
    • Opportunity to learn non-invasive and invasive assessment of vascular disease
    • Operative experience available (optional focus)Exposure to patients with common comorbidities (diabetes, cardiac, renal, pulmonary disease)
    • Optional participation in clinical research projects during elective period

Key Learning Objectives

By the end of the elective, students will:

  • Function as junior residents within the vascular surgery team.
  • Gain skills in clinical assessment of vascular disease.
  • Observe and/or participate in operative cases.
  • Understand the perioperative management of complex vascular patients.
  • Participate in conferences and academic activities unique to McGill Vascular Surgery.
